To retain customers, several grocery markets are offering customer-debit
cards that allow for convenient payment of groceries and access

When purchasing
groceries a customer need only slide his/her loyalty-card through
an electronic reader at the checkout stand. The reader identifies
the data on the magnetic stripe or bar code panel and connects
the card holder to a central computer database. This database

available on the items purchased they will be automatically
deducted from the customer's grocery bill. This system eliminates
the time spent writing checks and clipping coupons.
